VIOLETT PI | BALONEY SUICIDE (*the album)

Baloney Suicide

the title suggests a number of thematic avenues, exploring aspects of baloney (epitome of the false) and suicide, bringing them together in an idea of “false death”: that which we romanticize and “give ourselves”, even though it is without benefit. And if you ask VioleTT Pi if he’s all right, he’ll tell you “yes“: that he’s not talking about himself, that this is an album, a concept, not real life, and that he’s only trying to talk about it, to help – by questioning, in particular, the impact of these voids created, “given”, on a human and societal scale. Right off the bat: it’s not happy, but there’s hope, and that’s what stimulates him through this weighty subject.

Let the album sound like a song and a song sound like the album“, “Endings are already at the beginning“, “Saturate the pieces with information so you don’t need another medium to ‘see’ them“: aphorisms as much as constraints that become creative engines. On Baloney Suicide, we find the vertiginous yet condensed and abrasive scaffolding of songs that are VioleTT Pi’s trademark, while at the same time creating diversity in its catalog – now relying more on vocal melodic lines, deconstructing structures a little less so that the pop aspect can unfold more widely, focusing on the beautiful rather than the disturbing.

In his 7-year absence from the music scene, he’s had time to try many, many things, and to place them better. Baloney Suicide presents a more finished process – but, as always, the next one will be even better: “I’m glad I wasn’t very good at the beginning,” assures a VioleTT Pi satisfied with his evolutionary curve.

Baloney Suicide was written, composed and co-produced by VioleTT Pi, supported on this last point by his bassist colleague Sylvain Deschamps. The album also features Maxime Drouin on drums, Daniel Baillargeon on guitar, Klô Pelgag on synth on “Pollen Saturnien” and a cameo by Antoine Corriveau on “La qualité de ta détresse”, with mixing by the eternal Pierre Girard.

A launch-show will take place on April 27 at Club Soda in Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles.
