With its high-energy afro-funk fusion influenced by Fela Kuti’s politicized afrobeat, Parliament’s clever groovy funk, James Brown’s passionate soul flavour, Bruno Mars’ bubbly pop sound and Jimi Hendrix’s rock intensity, Papagroove — easily recognizable on stage by its raw spirit, its mastery of improvisation and its explosive presence — has performed at Montreal Jazz Fest, Calgary Folk Music Festival, Calgary International Blues Festival, Hornby Festival, SunFest, Festival international des rythmes du monde, Festival d’été de Québec, Rimouski Jazz Fest, Woodstock en Beauce, Ottawa Jazz Fest (opening for Medeski, Martin & Wood), Maximum Blues, Festif (opening for Cat Empire) and Global Groove since its beginning in 2006. Born to be wild and free, the band is yet again ready to surprise us. This fall, the indomitable beast puts itself in the hunter’s boots.

« Work, competition, envy, religion, love and blind submission to power can lead to excesses as well as to the destruction of our social, environmental and relational structures », tells Sébastien Francisque, main lyricist within the band. «The record seeks to highlight the fact that our modern activities are only an adaptation of our instinct into a contemporary context and that our greed stems from this hunter-gatherer heritage of ours. This instinct remains deeply rooted in us ».

Marking the beginning of a new era for the imposing Montreal collective, THE HUNT undeniably retains the social dimension omnipresent and inseparable from their previous efforts (WE’RE NOT BLIND and CIVILIZED GHETTO, respectively released in 2008 and 2012). Produced by Guy Kaye (winner of the Juno award for world album of the year in 2011 — AXIL by Élage Diouf), the record also gathers notable artists such as vocalists Kim Richardson, Ilam, Marie-Christine Depestre, Carine Agboton, Laetitia Zonzambé and Anastasia Friedman, saxophone player Philippe Dalpé, trumpet player David Robitaille and writer Ariel Harrod (Cheshire Carr).

You know how the hunter always carries its weapon of choice when chasing its prey? It’s no different here. Composed of Sylvain Plante (drums), Gabriel Lajoie (bass), Guy Kaye (guitars), Jacques Kuba Séguin (trumpet), Matthieu Van-Vliet (trombone), Mario Allard (alto saxophone), Jean-François Ouellet (baritone saxophone), Sébastien Francisque (vocals), Mélissa Lavergne (percussions) as well as François Therrien and Martin Lizotte (both playing keyboards), the band has picked its own a long time ago. For Papagroove, music is and will remain the best and most subtle weapon of all.
